7:09 pm - brian wood

Fellow Lawrence University alumnus, musical theatre pal, and video game designer Brian Wood was killed in a car accident in Washington on Friday night. It would be insincere of me to say that we were close, but he was a great guy.

10:37 pm - MuHI IV/V

Hey, does anyone remember if DeCorsey made us watch ALL of the Bernstein Norton lectures, or just the one that ends with Mahler 9 (Part IV, I believe)?

I remember it being a lot of video, and the first three and last part all seem familiar to me, but I only have vivid visual memories of the Fourth section.

5:11 pm

I just received registration materials for the reunion in June. This'll be my first Lawrence reunion weekend.

For those who have gone in the past, what should us first-timers expect? Was it worth going to, and/or are you planning on going to the next one for your class? Are there any events attendees should definitely go to, or any they should avoid? (For example, Alumni College, Reunion Convocation, etc.)

7:24 am - Since my memory fails me today...

Back in the day when I was at Lawrence from 99-03, there was a book that was consistently recommended by the Writing Lab to improve your writing style, fix common linguistic mistakes, etc... It came up in conversation, and I can't for the life of me remember what it was. Someone else must remember... What was the title?

12:12 am - a few questions

I hope you guys dont mind if I ask you all some questions about Lawrence U. It's definitely on my list and I probably am applying, but I'm curious about the place. Is it diverse? I live in SoCal, and have friends of every kind and from different income levels, so I wonder what to expect. how are the dorms/food? is the town great? thank you.

I was admitted to Lawrence and I'm going to be visiting on the 13th of April. I'm going to take a tour, have lunch, visit a class, hopefully meet the fencing coach Steve Amich, and... what else? Is there anything I definitely should not miss while I'm there?

Any suggestions you may have are greatly appreciated! :)

4:57 pm - Fridge for Sale

I've a mini-fridge (not sure on exact size, but allowed in LU dorms and approximately 3' tall) that I'm trying to sell before the end of the year. It's a few years old, in good condition, and clean. I just moved third term and we don't need two, and I'd rather not have to move it home in June.

I'm asking $60.

Please comment here or e-mail grassoj @ LU if interested.

11:53 am - There's More To Appleton Than Our Acclaimed Escorts

Have you thought about making Appleton, WI the destination for your next vacation, business meeting, or even place to live? It may not spring to mind right away, like Las Vegas or Sheboygan, but I certainly hope you'll consider us. We're not as big as Milwaukee, but we're a terrific community with a lot of heart and plenty of fun activities. Sure, you could stay just long enough to be serviced by one of our regionally renowned escorts, but we also encourage you to look around and enjoy all that our riverside city has to offer.

12:21 am - Warning: Trever vending will kill you
fullofguts Stay away from the Trever vending machines, kids. They'll kill ya.

In an attempt to keep things healthy, I managed to pull together some exact change for the Minute Maid juice vending machine in Trever. Back in my room I opened up the orange juice and took a drink, and nearly spit it out. I checked the "best by" date on the bottle: May 22, 2006.

Well, I also bought some apple juice. Maybe that's fresh... Oh, nope. July 17, 2006.

So don't use the juice machine, because you'll die.

6:43 pm - Intro to Psychology

I'm taking Intro to Psych with Hetzler, and I'm enjoying the class a lot, but one thing is worrying me: my advisor was very adamant about the dificulty of his exams. She basically warned me that the exams are teh devil and told me to seek out someone who's taken the class and who can show me what to expect on his exams.

So this is where I'm going for help. Has anyone taken Intro to Psych who would like to meet up to share valuable wisdom, test-taking skill, or old exams so I have some idea of what to deal with?

I'd be eternally grateful, and you'd get to meet a freshman(!).

Bonus points if anyone is a paid tutor. That way, you benefit, too. (Of course, I could find one of those if I went to Academic Services, I think. And I have no experience with that, either.)

So...suggestions? People who want to meet up? Please do tell.

9:35 pm - Getting to Madison

I am a Lawrence student, therefore I live in Appleton. I would greatly like to get to Madison during the fall term reading period (October 26th to 29th). I gather Madison is a fairly large city, yet this seems impossible to achieve.

I have no car on campus.
I am too young to rent a car.
Greyhound takes about 7 hours to get from Appleton to Madison.
Lamer Bus Lines does not go near Madison.

Can you get a taxi or something that far? Are any of the trains I hear going by daily passenger trains? Is there any possible way to get to Madison in about 2-3 hours? Am I missing something blatantly obvious?

EDIT: Amtrak is out. They have stations in both Appleton and Madison, but they are not connected by any route (although I could get home to Pittsburgh on a train!).

2:03 pm

This prospie is back for another round of questions, lol. I posted a while back on a different user name as a junior about the double degree program and getting into the conservatory...blahblah, etc.

Anyway, so I'm back. I'm diving headfirst into applications right about now (yuck) and it's really looking like Lawrence is one of my top, if not my first, choices. One problem.

The cash.

I know that I shouldn't look at the money and go to the place that is the best fit. But it's hard to convince myself (and my parents, for that matter) that it's worth the extra 25 grand a year. (That's without financial aid, I know. But still, take off a max of 10,000 for scholorships/grants and that's still 15,000 X at least 4 = 60,000...ouchhh.)

Do you ever regret going to Lawrence? Is it worth the extra money? Why?

3:51 pm - Banking in Appleton?

I was hoping to go ahead and open an account at a national bank in Dallas so I can do my banking at home, and in Appleton. Does anyone have any suggestions of a good bank within walking distance of campus? Also, do any banks have ATMs on campus?

2:16 am - NYT article: Students' Paths to Small College Can Bypass SAT

It's not directly LU related, but I thought some of you might be interested in seeing an article from today's New York Times on standardized testing, admissions exams, and small colleges.

It is still far too early to sound the death knell, but for many small liberal arts colleges, the SAT may have outlived its usefulness. Since Bowdoin and Bates dropped their testing requirements decades ago, more than a fourth of U.S. News & World Report’s Top 100 liberal arts colleges have made admissions exams optional, and new ones are joining the list at a quickening pace.

(Registration may be required, but that's why the deity of your choice made BugMeNot.)
